Swaroopyog Pratishthan

Swaroopyog Pratishthan

Shrimat Dasbodh Swadhyay

Dashak 2; samas 1

The name given to this section of chapters is “MoorkhaLakshanancha” (characteristics of fools). However, only first and tenth chapters describe the characteristics of fools. The other chapters are “Kuvidya lakshan” (characteristics of adverse knowledge), “Rajogun lakshan” (characteristics of passion) and “Tamogun lakshan” (characteristics of ignorance). In these five chapters, Samarth has described the wrong attitudes and inadequate behavior. Along with this, the other five chapters are “Uttam lakshan” (best qualities), “Bhakti nirupan (discourse on devotion), “Satvagun lakshan” (characteristics of divine nature), “Sadvidya nirupan” (discourseof true knowledge), “Virakta lakshan” (characteristics of abstinence from worldly pleasures). These five chapters describe essential good attitudes and behavior. The land i.e. the mind where seeds of knowledge are sown should be made fertile with this good behavior so these chapters are essential to learn how one should behave and the other five to learn what should be avoided thus making the entire dashak worth studying. It is a fun too while studying the other five chapters, because one always applies characteristics of fools and learned fools to others.

There is a humorous caricature here. Someone has said, “To err is human!”, but someone else has said “To err is human but to blame it on other party is politics”. Samartha has prayed to Shree GaneshSharada andSadguru and in memory of Raghunth (God Ram), he has described characteristics of fools that should be avoided.

Yek Moorkha Yek padhatmoorkha | Ubhay Lakshani Kautuk |Shroti Saadar Vivek | Kela Pahije ||
Means,

One is fool another learned fool | how to appreciate both |Audience should be able | to discriminate ||
Not only is the person who does not follow morality and justice and behaves disorderly is called a fool, but also the person who is not caring or loving towards family members, or the one who behaves against social ethics or norms, or who is unclean and does not take care of his health, or the one who has lot of demerits are all called as fools. In addition, one who does not study any books, neither reads nor keeps the books in good condition, and never lends a book to anyone else, one who is not practical are all included in the category of fools. In this category, Samartha has not forgotten to include people who forget the main support of God, and instead depend on others.

Not being loving to members of the family is foolishness –

Family environment should be full of love; everyone should feel it as a place of solace. One who does not talk lovingly with family members and troubles them instead is the biggest fool according to Samarth.

Gharachyanvari Khaay Dadha | Baheri Deen Bapuda |Aisa Jo Ka Ved Moodha | To Ek Moorkh ||Jeevalagans Param Khedi | Sukhacha Shabd Tohi Nedi |Neech Janans Vandi | To Ek Moorkh ||
Means,

One who shouts at family members | And is weak when away from home |The one who is stupid or mad like this | is a fool || One who disappoints close relatives/friends | Never speaks a good word |And salutes malicious people | Is a fool ||
One who behaves against social etiquettes is a fool –

While describing this, the style of Samartha’s narration will surely create laughter.

Akaran Hasya Kari | Vivek Sangata Na Dhari |Jo Bahutancha Vairi | To Ek Moorkha |Bahut Jagate Jan | Tayanmadhe Kari Shayan |Parasthali Bahubhojan | To Ek Moorkha ||Unchi Jauni Vastra Nese | Chaubara Baheri Base |Sarvakal Nagn Dise | To Ek Moorkha ||Doghe Bolat Asati Jethe | Tisara Jaun Baise Tethe |Doi Khajavi Dohi Hate | To Ek Moorkha ||
Means,

One who laughs without a reason | Even though someone else guides him, he does not listen |One who is an enemy of many | is a fool ||When many people are awake | there he then sleeps |Eats a lot of food at unfamiliar place | is a fool ||Dresses-up at a height | or sits at the crossroads in a public place |Appears nude most of the time | is a fool |While two persons are talking | he interferes in-between |Scratches his head with two hands | is a fool ||
One who does not follow proper cleanliness and does not take care of his health is a fool –

An unclean person is avoided by all. The physical body is in fact, the first medium to achieve anything in this world. It should be well looked after, but people behave as fools even about this too.

Aushadh Na Ghe Ason Vetha | Pathya Na Kari Sarvatha |Na Mile Aaliya Padartha | To Ek Moorkha |Dant Chakshu Aani Ghran | Pani Vasan Aani Charan | Sarvakal Jayache Malin | To Ek Moorkha ||
Means,

One who does not take medicine when he is ill | never follows any diet |Eats whatever he gets | is a fool ||Teeth eyes and nose | hands clothes and feet |Whose are always dirty | is a fool ||
With these characteristics and other such verses, we must verify that none of them apply to us. That is why they are explained here in this chapter.
