If you sleep well in your younger years, it may help keep your memory sharp once you cross 70 years of age, says a new study.
Michael K Scullin, PhD, at Baylor University examined 50 years of sleep research to determine whether improving sleep early in life might delay, or even reverse, age-related changes in memory and thinking, and came across studies that showed that sleeping well in middle age predicted better mental functioning 28 years later.
The article notes that the benefits of a sound night's sleep for young adults are diverse and unmistakable. One example is that a particular kind of "deep sleep" called "slow-(brain)-wave-sleep" helps memory by taking pieces of a day's experiences, replaying them and strengthening them for better recollection.
By the time people reach middle age, more sleep during the day, such as an afternoon nap, also helps people's memory and protects against its decline -- as long they don't skimp on nighttime sleep. But as they grow older, people wake up more at night and have less deep sleep and dream sleep -- both of which are important for overall brain functioning, said Scullin.
Researchers' extensive review began with studies as long ago as 1967, including more than approximately 200 studies measuring sleep and mental functioning. Participants ages 18 to 29 were categorised as young; ages 30 to 60 as middle-aged; and older than 60 as old.
Participants were asked how many hours they typically slept, how long it takes them to go to sleep, how often they wake in the middle of the night and how sleepy they feel during the day. The research also correlated results from numerous brain-wave studies and experiments dealing with sleep deprivation, napping and sleep intervention, such as sleep medications.
Scullin noted that if a person lives 85 years, he or she may sleep nearly 250,000 hours - more than 10,000 full days.
The article is published in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.

I bow with my forehead touching the earth and praise Goddess VANi (Saraswathi), who has a waist like a fine white sand (as in a beach), whose beautiful braided hair looks like a large gathering of bees, who protects the gods of heaven, who alone  conquered the heart of the lotus-seated Brahma, and who holds in her beautiful hands a string of beads (japamAla), a parrot, a lotus, and a book.

(When Hiranyakashipu asks PrahlAda what he learnt from his teachers, while replying that devotion to Vishnu is what he learnt, Prahlada defends that devotion in this poem). Can a bee that is used to take sweet nectar from crown flower go to other plants? Can a swan that enjoys the lilting winds at the pure river MaMdakini (in HimAlayAs) go to other rivers? Can a cuckoo used to eating tender leaves go to coral reefs? Can a partridge used to the inspiration of full moon’s brightness go to foggy seashores? How can a mind that revels in drinking the nectar of thinking of the lotus-like feet of NarayaNa think of anything else? O Father, your qualities are praised all over the world, why say so many words other than devotion to VishNu?

Are the eyes that do not see the husband of Lakshmi (Hari) really eyes? No, they are holes in the walls of the body. Is a life without thinking about Cakri (Hari, who holds a spinning wheel on his fingers) a life? No, it is a bubble on the waves of water. Is a learned who does not have devotion to VishNu a learned person? No, he is an animal with two feet!

కాననిభంగి కర్మములు గైకొని కొందరు కర్మబద్ధులై
కానరు విష్ణు కొందరట గందురకించిన వైష్ణవాంఘ్రి సం
స్థానరజోభిషిక్తులగు సంహృతకర్ములు దానవేశ్వరా.  (13)
kAnanivAninUtagoni kAnanivADu vishiShTavastuvul
kAnanibhaMgi karmamulu gaikoni koMdaru karmabaddhulai
kAnaru viShNu koMdaraTa gaMdurakiMcina vaiShNavAMghri saM
sthAnarajObhiShiktulagu saMhRutakarmulu dAnavEshvarA.


Just as a blind man following another blind man does not see anything significant, some people thinking that actions such as sacrifices are adequate and get tied to such actions do not see VishNu. Only those who believe in being on ViShnu’s side and go beyond action can see Him.





.    తన్ను నిశాచరుల్ వొడువ దైత్యకుమారుడు మాటిమాటి కో
పన్నగశాయి! యోదనుజభంజన! యోజగదీశ! యోమహా
పన్నశరణ్య! యోనిఖిలపావన! యంచు నుతించు గాని తా
కన్నుల నీరు దేడు భయకంపసమేతుడు గాడు భూవరా.  (14)
tannu nishAcarul voDuva daityakumAruDu mATimATi kO
pannagashAyi yOdanujabhaMjana yOjagadIsha yOmahA
pannasharaNya yOnikhilapAvana yaMcu nutiMcu gAni tA
kannula nIru dEDu bhayakaMpasamEtuDu gADu bhUvarA.


Even when the night-movers (demons) keep hurting him in several ways (on the orders of Hiranyakashipu who was angry that PrahlAda is devoted to Hari), PrahlAda, the son of rAkshasAs (demons), repeatedly keeps praying Hari by saying O Vishnu who lies on a serpent!, O destroyer of demons!, O Lord of the Universe!, O protector of those who seek refuge! O purifier of all!, etc., but neither sheds tears nor becomes afraid.

yiMciti pekku pATla nalayiMciti cAvaDidEmi citramO!


(After trying several ways to kill Prahlada, Hiranyakashipu thinks within himself) – I tried to drown him (PrahlAda) in seas, hit him with maces, threw him down from hilltops, cut him down with swords, stamped him down by a row of elephants, threatened, cursed, threw him in scary fires, and in so many ways tried to kill him. What a wonder that he does not die!


క.    బలయుతులకు దుర్బలులకు
బలమెవ్వడు నీకు నాకు బ్రహ్మాదులకున్
బలమెవ్వడు ప్రాణులకును
బలమెవ్వ డట్టి విభుడు బలమసురేంద్రా.  (16)

When Hiranyakashipu asks wherefrom he gets his support, Prahlada replied – O King of Rakshasas! For the strong as well as the weak, for you, me, and Brahma and other gods, for all the living beings, whoever is the support He is my support also.

గల డగ్నిన్ దిశలం బగళ్లనిశలన్ ఖద్యోతచంద్రాత్మలం
గల డోంకారమునం ద్రిమూర్తుల ద్రిలింగవ్యక్తులం దంతటం
గల డీశుండు గలండు తండ్రి వెదకంగా నేల యీయాయెడన్.  (17)

gala Dagnin dishalaM bagaLlanishalan khadyOtacaMdrAtmalaM
gala DOMkAramunaM drimUrtula driliMgavyaktulaM daMtaTaM
gala DIshuMDu galaMDu taMDri vedakaMgA nEla yIyAyeDan


When Hiranyakashipu asks where is Hari, PrahlAda replied – O father! Hari is in the oceans, in the air, in the sky, in the earth, in fire, in all directions, in daytime and night time, in those who light up the sky such as moon, in OMkAra, in the three deities (Brahma, ViShnu, Shiva), in all three genders, in everywhere; why look here and there?


క.    ఇందు గల డందు లేడని
సందేహము వలదు చక్రి సర్వోపగతుం
డెందెందు వెదకి చూచిన
అందందే కలడు దానవాగ్రణి వింటే.  (18)
iMdu gala DaMdu lEDani
saMdEhamu valadu cakri sarvOpagatuM
DeMdeMdu vedaki cUcina
aMdaMdE kalaDu dAnavAgraNi viMTE.
O king of RakShasa! There is no need for a doubt whether He is here or there. Cakri (Hari) is everywhere, wherever you see you can find Him there.


క.    డింభక సర్వస్థలముల
అంభోరుహనేత్రుడుండు ననుచు మిగుల సం
రంభంబున బలికెద వీ
స్తంభంబున జూప గలవె చక్రిన్ గిక్రిన్. (19)
DiMbhaka sarvasthalamula
aMbhOruhanEtruDuMDu nanucu migula saM
raMbhaMbuna balikeda vI
staMbhaMbuna jUpa galave cakrin gikrin


O kid! You have been saying with great conviction that the lotue-eyed Hari is everywhere. Can you show Cakri (Hari) in this pillar? (Notice the use of the wordgikrin, which is simply a derogatory expression twisting the word Chakrin, indicating the contempt Hiranyakashipu has for Vishnu).

హరిమూర్తియు గాదు మానవాకారము కే
సరి యాకారము నున్నది
హరిమాయారచిత మగు యదార్థము చూడన్.  (20)
naramUrti gAdu kEvala
harimUrtiyu gAdu mAnavAkAramu kE
sari yAkAramu nunnadi
harimAyAracita magu yadArthamu cUDan.


Breaking the pillar, came from it Lord Narasimha, who is neither human, nor a lion, but a combined lion-human shape with a lion’s face, as ViShNu’s incarnation displaying Hari’s mysterious ways.


Lord Narasimha then grabs Hiranyakashipu and kills him without violating the boon he got from Brahma, in a body that is neither human nor animal, in his lap which is neither ground nor sky, with his nails that are neither living nor lifeless, at the entrance which is neither inside nor outside, and at dusk which is neither day nor night.
